S.E.A. Aquarium
S.E.A. (South East Asia) Aquarium, operated by RWS, holds over 100,000 marine animals from around 1,000 species in forty-nine habitats. The Open Ocean viewing panel, one of the largest in the world when it opened, is the signature stop.
Route through the aquarium
The circuit begins at the Karimata Strait zone (freshwater and estuarine species of southeast Asia), moves through the Straits of Malacca into the Bay of Bengal, then onwards through the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea into the Open Ocean habitat. Shark Seas, with its acrylic tunnel, is near the end. Expect to spend around 90 minutes at a comfortable pace; families with children often take two hours or more.
Habitat highlights
- Open Ocean — a 36-metre viewing panel into a 18-million-litre tank. Manta rays, scalloped hammerheads and schools of trevally make slow passes.
- Shark Seas — an acrylic walk-through with sand tigers and silvertip reef sharks overhead.
- Reef Discovery — hands-off tactile pools where staff talk through starfish, sea cucumbers and small reef fish.
- Live dive feeds — scheduled daily; keep an eye on the display board at the entrance.
Best time to visit
The aquarium is busiest between 11:00 and 15:00. First-hour openings and the hour before closing are the quietest; the Open Ocean panel is often empty enough for extended viewing in these windows. On rainy Singapore afternoons the aquarium fills up as outdoor attractions thin out — plan accordingly.
Accessibility
The aquarium is step-free throughout. Wheelchairs are available on request at the entrance. Hearing-induction loops operate at the live-feed theatres.
